These are decorative ceramic disks, made of white stoneware clay and fired in a unique technique called saggar firing.
After the pieces were fired for the first time, I put them in a lidded ceramic vessel and covered them with sawdust, wires and other materials in order to create inside the vessel a localised reducing atmosphere. Then the vessel was carefully closed and fired again in the kiln.
The results of saggar firing are unpredictable and sometimes surprising. No two pieces can be the same! This is what makes this technique unique.
All pieces are handmade with stoneware clay, glazed and fired at 1240°C.
The shape is slightly irregular highlighting the handmade nature of the piece.
Handcrafted ceramic items may slightly differ in colour, size or shape, making each one unique.
